Spruance-class 1/100 Scale 1730mm (68.1") US Navy Destroyer - RTR from Bancroft - BNC1068-003

The Spruance-class destroyers were a series of 31 U.S. Navy warships commissioned between 1975 and 1983, designed primarily for anti-submarine warfare but capable of multi-mission operations. Built by Ingalls Shipbuilding, they were the first large U.S. Navy destroyers to feature gas turbine propulsion, using four General Electric LM2500 engines for high speed, rapid startup, and reduced maintenance compared to steam power. Their sleek, spacious design allowed for easy upgrades, which proved essential over their service life.

Initially armed with two 5-inch guns, ASROC launchers, and torpedo tubes, the Spruance-class later received Harpoon anti-ship missiles and, on some ships, Tomahawk cruise missiles that greatly enhanced strike capability. They carried two LAMPS III SH-60B Seahawk helicopters for extended anti-submarine reach.

Though criticized early on for appearing lightly armed, their sophisticated sonar, quiet propulsion, and large growth margin made them formidable in Cold War naval strategy. The class served worldwide, escorting carriers, patrolling contested waters, and participating in combat operations, including the 1991 Gulf War.

The last Spruance-class destroyer was decommissioned in 2005, replaced by Arleigh Burke-class ships. Their innovative propulsion, modular design, and adaptability influenced future U.S. surface combatant development.
